St Jacobi Church Band & Male Choir

"This photograph was taken In 1896 and shows the church band/male chorus of St. Jacobi church at Bergholtz, N.Y. The choir was organized about ninety years ago and is still active today. Vacancies, caused in course of time by death or retirement on account pf old age, are filled by younger musicians, often a son taking the place of a retiring father. Since its organization up to about fifteen years ago, when a pipe organ was installed, the band accompanied the congregational singing. On special occasions this band-choir can still be heard in the Bergholtz church. Some of the old fashioned instruments shown in the picture have been replaced by instruments of modern type. Theodore D. Grabau, teacher and organist of St. Jacobl's church, has been leader of this choir for the last twenty five years. This picture was taken at the Old John Mueller homestead on Mr. Mueller's 60th birthday. He was at that time a retired member. In the row standing, from left to right, are: August Mueller. August Ferchen, Fred Hoffmeister,Henry Heuer, Sr., Christ Hoffmeister, Philip Mueller, Edward Goerss, John Zimmerman, John Millevllle, Albert DeVantier. Seated, from left to right, are: William Voelker, Fred Goerss, William Ferchen, Henry Voelker, August Moll, Christian Ferchen, leader: William Milleville, William Schmidt, John Mueller, John Moll." from the NF Gazette
