    • Francis "Frank" Donato, 79, who enjoyed attending his Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion meetings, died unexpectedly Tuesday (Oct. 3, 2000) in Mount St. Mary's Hospital, Lewiston. He was born in Niagara Falls, attended local schools and enjoyed spending time with his family. Donato served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1940 to 1945. He served in the Aleutian Islands and in northern France in the Battle of the Bulge. He was a carpenter who worked for various contractors out of his union. In addition, he was a lather and business agent for a lathers' union. Donato was a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church, Niagara Falls, Carpenters' Union Local 280, and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 917 of Niagara Falls and a member of Wheatfield Post 1451, American Legion, for more than 15 years. In addition, he served on its board of directors. Survivors include his wife, the former Mary L. Woomer; three sons, Rickie Donato of Lewiston, Richard Sever of Lockport and Francis Donato; three daughters, Kathy Sonberg of Newfane, Virginia Berds of Lewiston and Sandra Rovison; four sisters, Angeline Corsaro, Florence Donato, Lena Appoloney and Josephine Tedesco, all of Niagara Falls; 15 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 A.M. Friday in St. Leo's Catholic Church, 2748 Military Road, Niagara Falls, following prayers at 9 in M.J. Colucci & Son Funeral Chapel, 468 19th St., Niagara Falls. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery Mausoleum, Niagara Falls.
