    • John D. 'Bud' Snell, of Lewiston, NY, passed away Thursday, February 18, 2016, in Mt. St. Mary's after a valiant battle with cancer. He was born in Williamsville, NY, on February 17, 1934, a son of the late Claude W. and Iona A. (Kratzman) Snell. On June 16, 1951 he married Wilma 'Billie' (Smith) Snell. He graduated from Niagara Falls High School class of 1951 and attended Niagara University. Mr. Snell retired from Occidental Chemical Corporation as Corporate Safety Manager in 1996 after 37 years of service. His professional accomplishments include: Past President of the WNY chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers, Past President of the WNY Safety Conference where he received the 'Outstanding Safety Professional of The Year' award and was a Board Certified Safety Professional. He co-authored safety pamphlets for the Chlorine Institute, the Chemical Manufacturers Assoc. and peer reviewed several books for the Center for Chemical Process Safety. He served on the ASTM Occupational Health and Safety Committee and the Murray State University Safety and Health Dept. Advisory Committee. He was a guest lecturer at Purdue University. John was an active church worker. He served as President of two congregations (the former Trinity Lutheran and Our Savior Lutheran) both of Niagara Falls. He served as Lay Delegate to the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod District Conventions for 40 years. He also served as Vice President and Head Elder at Grace Lutheran Church where he was a member at the time of his death. He was a member of the Lewiston Lions' Club and was 'Lion of the Year' in 2014. Bud was an avid reader, enjoyed boating, traveling, yard work and spending time with his family. After retirement Bud and Billie spent winters in Fort Myers where he was active in St. Michael Lutheran Church, Manatee Park where he spent nine years as an Interpretive Naturalist and Docent, and served as the FMO representative for the community in which they lived. He is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Billie; one son, David M. (Kim) Snell; two daughters, Debra L. (Terry) Haseley, Cynthia A. Snell; and three grandsons, Jonathan and Justin Snell, Matthew Haseley; and several nieces and nephews. 'Bud' was a wonderful and loving husband, father and grandfather. He will be deeply missed by his family. He was the brother of the late Carlo D. (Esther) Snell. His family will be present on Sunday from 2-4 & 7-9 PM at RHONEY FUNERAL HOME, 901 Cayuga St. LEWISTON, NY. Funeral Services on Monday at 10:30 AM at Grace Lutheran Church, 736 Cayuga St. NIAGARA FALLS, NY, with Rev. Benjamin G. Bahr officiating. Interment in Memorial Park Lewiston, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Grace Lutheran Church.
