||St Jacobi Church Band & Male Choir|
"This photograph was taken In 1896 and shows the church band/male chorus of St. Jacobi church at Bergholtz, N.Y. The choir was organized about ninety years ago and is still active today. Vacancies, caused in course of time by death or retirement on account pf old age, are filled by younger musicians, often a son taking the place of a retiring father. Since its organization up to about fifteen years ago, when a pipe organ was installed, the band accompanied the congregational singing. On special occasions this band-choir can still be heard in the Bergholtz church. Some of the old fashioned instruments shown in the picture have been replaced by instruments of modern type. Theodore D. Grabau, teacher and organist of St. Jacobl's church, has been leader of this choir for the last twenty five years. This picture was taken at the Old John Mueller homestead on Mr. Mueller's 60th birthday. He was at that time a retired member. In the row standing, from left to right, are: August Mueller. August Ferchen, Fred Hoffmeister,Henry Heuer, Sr., Christ Hoffmeister, Philip Mueller, Edward Goerss, John Zimmerman, John Millevllle, Albert DeVantier. Seated, from left to right, are: William Voelker, Fred Goerss, William Ferchen, Henry Voelker, August Moll, Christian Ferchen, leader: William Milleville, William Schmidt, John Mueller, John Moll." from the NF Gazette

Peace Justice William Schmidt, 71, Dies Here Few Hours After Collision.
Joseph Czekaj May Face Manslaughter Charge; Victim Well Known in County.
Peace Justice William Schmidt, 71 years old, of the Ward road, Town of Wheatfield, court crier of Niagara County, died at 10:30 o'clock today in Memorial hospital of injuries received in an automobile accident at 7:30 o'clock this morning, Helmuth Mellenthine, also of the Ward road, driver of the automobile in which Mr. Schmidt was riding when the accident occurred, received minor cuts and bruises.
Driver is held.
Joseph Czekaj, who lives at the intersection of the Town Line road and the Lockport road, driver of the automobile which crashed into the machine in which Mr. Schmidt and Mr. Mellenthine were riding, was arrested by Undersheriff Ira Cowdrick following the crash. He was arraigned before Justice of the Peace Treichler, of Sanborn, and was held in $1,000 bail on a charge of reckless driving. Undersheriff Cowdrick said the charge would probably be changed to one of manslaughter. The accident occurred at the intersection of the Lockport road and the Ward road. Mr. Schmidt and Mr. Mellenthine were on their way to Lockport, Mr. Schmidt to serve as court crier and Mr. Mellenthine to answer a summons for duty on the grand jury. The Mellenthine car was being driven north in the Ward road when it was struck by Czekaj's car, which was coming east in the Lockport road. Mellenthine's car was overturned by the impact and Mr. Schmidt was pinned beneath the wreckage, Undersheriff Cowdrick said that his investigation showed that Czekaj neglected to heed a stop sign before he drove onto the intersection.
Dr. W. L. Draper, coroner, of Niagara. Falls, is investigating the fatality. Dr. William Peart attended Schmidt. Mr. Schmidt was born in Germany and came to the United States 61 years ago. He has lived in Niagara county since coming to this country and was one of the best known residents of the county. He was a former supervisor for the Town of Wheatfield and served as court crier and justice of the peace for many years. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Albertine Milleville Schmidt, of the town of Wheatfield; two sons, John and Theodore Schmidt, both of the Town of Wheatfield, and four daughters, Mrs. William Lynch and Mrs. Ella Read of Niagara Falls, Mrs. Charles Runge, of St. Johnsburg, and Mrs. Anna Schendel, of the Town of Wheatfield.
