MRS. PHILIP LANG STRUCK BY BOLT OF LIGHTNING
Shock Broke Every Pane of Glass in Five Windows and Melted Works of Clock - Dog Under Bed is Stone Deaf - Church Struck
Shortly after 10 o'clock last evening, during the severe electrical storm which visited the Tonawandas, the house at 170 Broad street, occupied by Philip A. Lang, was struck by lightning and some of the queerest pranks were cut up. A bolt struck the northeast corner of the house, entered the front room of the second story, shattered five windows, and played havoc with the furnishings. Mrs. Lang, who was sleeping in the room at the time, miraculously escaped death, but lost the use of her left ear, and this morning has her whole left side affected with a peculiar numbness. After the electricity had passed out of the house, Mrs. Lang got up from the bed, lighted a lamp, and in her bare feet walked over the debris of broken glass, window sash, and nails without receiving so much as a scratch. When she came down stairs, she fainted in the arms of a neighbor. A dog which was sleeping under the bed occupied by Mrs. Lang, was stricken deaf by the shock. Wherever the lightning played about the room, it left a bluish brown track, and a smell of sulpher. Plaster was ripped from the walls, and the works of a clock which was struck were melted and run together. Besides the four windows in the room, one in the hall just outside the door was shattered. In places the electric fluid bored holes, an inch or so in diameter, through the w%Ua, while elsewhere it burst casements or corners. In its endeavor to get free. The shock was so severe that several people within the block felt its force. A man was sitting on a veranda across the street was turned completely around in his chair. A prominent physician was affected with a numbness of his left arm for more than as hour afterward, and a woman residing near was badly shocked. Mrs. Lang was able to be up this morning, and it is thought that aside from losing the hearing of hlr left ear, she will experience no serious results.
