LEWISTON - Lawrence G. Fischer, 83, of Saunders Settlement I Road, died Thursday (June 26, 1997) at his home, which he built and had lived in since 1939. He was born Oct. 13, 1913, in Niagara Falls, the son of the John and Catherine (Schul) Fischer. He was a 1931 graduate of Niagara Falls High School and attended Niagara University and the State University at Buffalo. On Oct. 7, 1939 he married Bernice "Nellie" Stoltz in Lewiston. Mr. Fischer was the director of purchasing at Chisholm-Ryder in Niagara Falls for 36 years, retiring in 1978. He was a lifelong member of the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. He also served as Sunday school superintendent, a church council member, a pastoral assistant and he served on several committees including Christian education, music and worship, and building and finance. Mr. Fischer was a member of the Free and Associated Masons Lodge 1049; a charter member of the Lewiston Fire Co. 2, where he served as past president; a member or the exempt Firemen' s Benevolent Association; a past president of the Niagara County Volunteer Firemen's Association; a Life Member of the Western New York and New York state volunteer firemen's associations; and a life member of the Purchasing Management Association of Buffalo. He served on the Lewiston School District 9 School Board and helped centralize the Niagara-Wheatfield Central School District. He was a charter member of the Niagara River Anglers Association and a member of the Sunshine Senior Citizens Club and the American Association of Retired Persons. Mr. Fischer enjoyed making wooden bird models and was a member of the Rainbow Wood Carvers Association and the National Wood Carvers Association. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Gall Hubbard of Centreville, Va., and Nancy Kessler of West Seneca; three grandchildren; three step grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Lucinda Nash, Anna Haseley, Carola Griffith, Leah Zeiger and William Fischer. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Otto Redanz Funeral Home LaSalle Park Chapel, 2215 Military Road, Town of Niagara, where a Masonic memorial service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. The Rev. Dwight Wascom will conduct services at 11 a.m. Saturday in Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1010 Michigan Ave., Niagara Falls. Interment will be in Riverdale Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Niagara Hospice, 4675 Sunset Drive, Lockport, N.Y. 14094; or to the Howard Zeiger Music Fund at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church.
