Leading Lewiston Agriculturist And Churchman Is Dead
Edward L. Haseley was one of most progressive farmers in Niagara County
      Courier-Express Niagara Falls Bureau
Niagara Falls, Sept. 14 - A leader as agriculturist, Lutheran layman and sportsman, Edward L. Haseley, Saunders Settlement Road was dead today. Last night he was stricken at the Buffalo market where he had gone with a load or cauliflower, one of his specialties and was taken to Mt. Mercy Hospital, where he passed away at 1:30 o'clock this morning. Born at the Haseley homestead, he made that his home throughout his 63 years. He was one of the most progressive, farmers in the county, and frequently co-operated with experimental agencies in attacking farm problems. During the last a summer the county farm bureau has been carrying on an experiment on his tract relative to elimination of squash bugs. At the Buffalo market, where he had the first stall, he was known for his geniality. In rural electrification he also was a leading figure. He was a school trustee for the Town of Lewiston. As an elder of St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Walmore he took a foremost part in parish work. He helped in the campaign which brought construction of the church and the parsonage. Activities of the Lutheran Brotherhood also engaged his attention. St. Peter's Church is a member of the American Lutheran Church, which is holding its Eastern district convention here this week. An ardent outdoor fan, he was an enthusiastic member of the Niagara County Sportsmen's Association of Niagara Falls. He was one of those who sought harmonious relations between City nimrods and owners of country tracts. He leaves a son, Erwin; two daughters, Mrs. Sigismund (sic) Pfohl and Mrs. Martin Milleville, all of the Town of Lewiston; three sisters, the Misses Hulda and Agatha Haseley of Niagara Falls arid Mrs. Sigismund (sic) Mackenson of Martinsville; a brother, Jonas, of Sanborn, and two grandchildren, Ruth Elaine and Ernest Haseley. Last rites will be held Thursday afternoon, at the family home at 2 o'clock Eastern Standard Time, and at St. Peter's Church at 3, with the Rev. Edward Grabau officiating. Burial will be in Walmore Cemetery.
